Cranbrook Church of England Primary School

NEWSLETTER April 2010

A very warm welcome back to you all – hope you all had a peaceful and

restful Easter time.

Sun Protection

We have enjoyed a lot of sunshine so far this term and hopefully we shall enjoy a

lot more.  Of course, sun brings its own dangers for young skin.  Please ensure

that your child is suitably protected during playtimes.  It is a good idea to put sun

screen on before your child comes to school.  Members of the school staff are

not allowed to apply sun screen.  A suitable sun hat is also a good idea to

help protect heads and faces from the sun.  (Please make sure these are named

and kept with your child’s PE kit).

Water

It is important that the children drink enough water throughout the school day.

We provide fresh water fountains in the school.  We would also like to

encourage you to send your child to school with a named sip-top see-through

water bottle either filled with water, or suitable for filling at school, so that your

child can have easy access to water in class, on the field, or during P.E.

lessons.  This is particularly important during the warmer weather.  Water

bottles can be purchased from the school office for £1 each.

National Tests

Year 2 children will be taking part in their end of Key Stage assessments during

May and June.  These involve teachers making assessments of the children’s

attainment against National Curriculum criteria.  There will be a small amount

of testing involved, but the children will not know that they are doing anything

out of the ordinary.

Year 6 children will be doing the national tests for Key Stage 2 during the week

beginning 10 May.

It is very important that children in these year groups attend school as much as

possible this term, particularly at the time of the tests for Year 6.   Parents will be

informed of the outcome of these assessments at the end of the summer term.

Swimming Lessons

Swimming lessons will be commencing at the end of May.  Full details will be

 in May’s newsletter.

School Uniform Reminder

We wish to remind you that all children should come to school in proper

uniform, shoes or sturdy sandals not trainers.  No jewellery apart from wrist

watches and stud earrings are allowed (worn at their own risk); stud earrings

must be removed or covered for P.E. and nail varnish should not be worn

to school please. Those children with long hair should have it tied back for

tidiness and hygiene.

P.E. Kit

Please ensure your child(ren) bring in their P.E. kit in and leave it in school

ready for P.E. lessons, then take home at the end of each term for washing.

Thank you for your support.

Labelling Property

Please name all your child’s uniform, lunch boxes, water bottles and P.E. kit.

Every day we find items we cannot return to their owners because there is no

name.

KentRider Safer Cycling Scheme – Y6

This will be taking place on 28th & 29th June, letters have already gone

out to year 6 parents/carers.  If your child is interested in participating in this

event please return relevant forms to the school office as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, some children will not be able to attend because it is Homewood

School’s induction week, which is a great pity.  These dates are booked a year

in advance prior to knowing Homewood’s diary, it is really frustrating I know.

July is a very busy month in schools and diary clashes are often unavoidable.

Quiz Night

This ever popular and fun event is due to take place on Friday 14th May – please

see Leslie Atkins to add your team to the list or for more information.

School Nurse Drop-in

Jean Ravenna, our School Nurse, will be holding another drop-in session at the school on

Wednesday, 12th May from 9am to 10am.   If you have any issue you wish to discuss with her,

please make an appointment at the office.  You can turn up on the day without an appointment

but the last drop-in was very busy and some parents had a long wait.  The school nurse

can advise you on any child health related issue and can give advice on any developmental,

heath or behavioural issues you may have.

Child with Numeracy

Our FREE Adult Education course on helping your child with numeracy has

now started but it is not too late to sign up for the next three sessions which

will take place on Wednesday, 28th April, 5th May and 12th May from 9.30am to

11.45am in the Out of School Club building.  Coffee will be served from 9.00am

if parents want to arrive earlier from dropping children off at school.   If you are

interested in coming along, please contact Judy Skellern, Parent Support

Adviser on her mobile:  07825 506552 or leave a message for her at the school

office.  12 parents have signed up already and found the introductory

session very interesting.  It does not matter what your own numeracy skills are

like as the course will explain how your child learns and Kate Crooke, the

Tutor, will give clear explanations.  Kate aims to equip parents with the skills

necessary for helping their children with numeracy.  Come along and join in!

Cranbrook Flour Show at Union Mill

This is a fun competition for home bread makers to be held on 9th May at 2.30pm.  Classes include hand made and machine made bread, under 12’s, and novelty shapes. For more information entry forms are available at the school office.
