English – Language, Literacy & Drama.

English teaching follows the National Primary Strategy Framework for Literacy. Most, but not all, of the teaching takes place within the daily literacy hour.

From the earliest days in school, children are encouraged to become enthusiastic readers and writers.  A detailed progressive programme of learning is taught throughout each child’s career at school.

All children are expected to read at home every day and there is a pattern of regular homework in English starting from Year 1 onwards.

We have a consistent and progressive approach to teaching synthetic phonics throughout the school, which enables our pupils to develop crucial skills for reading and spelling independently.  We have found that our approach is very successful in giving children they strategies they need to develop these important skills.

The National Literacy Strategy provides the basis for a well-structured programme for acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge to be a good writer, speller, listener, speaker and reader.

Drama is covered throughout the school with two major productions each year one by KS1 at Christmas and one by KS2 in the summer term.

Mathematics

The National Numeracy Strategy forms the basis of our mathematics teaching and learning.  All children have a structured daily mathematics lesson, which comprises whole class teaching and small group and individual work.

Oral and mental work features strongly in each lesson.

Our aim is for the children to be numerate and proficient in using mathematics in a wide range of contexts and situations.

Science

An investigative approach is used in the teaching of science with the children being encouraged to develop their skills of questioning, testing, observation, deduction and communication.  This lays a good foundation for the acquisition of scientific knowledge and relates to the skills associated with other areas in the curriculum.  The extensive grounds provide an excellent range of habitats, which are used as an additional resource in science and other subjects and to foster an awareness of the importance of caring for the environment.

Our aims in planning and teaching the curriculum are to develop each child’s skills and knowledge in the subject disciplines, but also to develop his/her skills as a learner.  An emphasis is placed upon developing those habits of mind, which increase a child’s ability to learn.  Learning and teaching are undertaken creatively and in a way that makes them directly relevant and engaging for the child.  Many links are made between subjects and much teaching is organised through the medium of cross-curricular topics.
