Cranbrook Church of England Primary School NEWSLETTER March 2010
Book Week
We have had another very good book week. Special thanks go to Mrs Roberts for organising the week, to parents who have donated contributions to help us fund the week and the Friends for their support in subsidising the cost of author visits. The children have had some great experiences, which we hope have helped them to see that anyone can be a writer. Peter Corey and Tim Walker certainly provided plenty of inspiration as well as entertainment. Thanks also to parents in supporting us with the dressing up day. The children were very imaginatively dressed and a great deal of creativity went into many of the costumes, which reflected our Theatre theme. Reports and Consultation Evenings The children's annual reports will be published on 12 March ahead of the Consultation Evenings, which are on 15 and 16 March. The purpose of this is to share with you the progress your child is making in relation to national expectations, targets we have set and their previous achievements. Please read the report carefully and make sure you book a consultation with your child's teacher. A separate letter has been sent out about this. If you have not received one, please contact the school office. Diversity Days - 29-30 March As you may know, it is a government requirement that the school makes children more aware of the multi-cultural nature of British society and indeed the world. This is not something new to this school, but we are taking a fresh approach to it. We already have our much valued link with Malawi, but we have also made a link with a school at which Mr Wibroe used to teach: Holy Trinity CE Primary School in Gravesend. This is not far away, but Gravesend has a different ethnic and social profile to Cranbrook. Our Year 6 pupils will be visiting the school and its locality and they in turn will visit us. The children will be learning about the culture and religions of India. As part of this we are planning 2 'Diversity Days' during which the children will learn about Indian dance, story telling, drama and culture. Workshops will be provided by visiting professional groups. A range of other learning activities are also planned.
Charity Days - 31 March - 1 April This year our Charity Days will be at the end of term. We will again be raising money for Kambwiri School in Malawi. More details will follow.
Helping your Child with Numeracy and Literacy We are about to run a FREE Adult Education course on Wednesday mornings in the out of school building. The course will last for 6 weeks and is aimed at helping parents understand how children learn. We have run this course before and all parents found it interesting and had a lot of fun. If you are interested in this course, please contact Judy Skellern (Parent Support Adviser) via the school office or on mobile number: 07825 506552 Walk on Wednesday Keep walking to school on Wednesdays to keep healthy, keep traffic away from the school gates, reduce pollution and to collect your stickers in your WOW Tally Cards. The class with the most walkers will win the WOW trophy. Rowling Class has it at the moment but it would be great to see if another class can beat them! Thank you for supporting WOW. Netball Club We took a team to Dulwich School on the 10th February and they played brilliantly, even though it was the first match of the season. The results were as follows. Cranbrook 5-1 Dulwich ‘C’ Cranbrook 2-3 Dulwich ‘B’ Cranbrook 0-5 Dulwich ‘A’ We have another match at Dulwich on 10th March, so good luck everyone! Also the WOKSSA League begins on Tuesday 9th March, 3.45pm-6.00pm at Angley for 3 weeks and the week after that is the Netball Tournament. All spectators welcome. The last Parents' Forum was held on Friday 26th February and 10 parents came along to meet our School Nurse, Jean Ravenna, who came along to tell us about her role and to answer questions on any child health issues. To summarise the main points: the school nurse carries out height and weight checks on all children in Year R and Year 6. Nationally and locally, there has been an increase in obesity in school age children and advice can be offered about healthy eating. The nurses no longer carry out eye tests but any parent can take their child to a local optician where a thorough test will be carried out for free. Other common issues on which the school nurse can offer advice are: immunisations, enuresis (bedwetting) - (which is more common than many realise), behavioural issues, common childhood illnesses as well as advising on treating head lice and threadworms which are very easily spread amongst children. School talks are offered on hygiene and puberty (which takes place in Year 6). Our parents found the talk extremely informative and following on from this we have arranged for our School Nurse to come to the school to offer drop-in clinics where she will be able to see parents and children with any health issue. Parents will be able to refer themselves to the school nurse and we urge you to use this drop-in as we think it will be a very good service to offer on a regular basis. The first two drop-ins will be on the following dates: Wednesday, 17th March from 2pm to 3pm Wednesday, 12th May from 9am to 10am You can come along on those dates or phone for an appointment beforehand by contacting the school office. Alternatively, Jean Ravenna can be contacted by phoning her at Jockey Lane Clinic on 01580 714935 The next Parents' Forum will be on Friday, 26th March at 9.30am to 10.30am. Coffee to be served from 9am. Nestle Box Tops This year’s scheme closes on 31st March so please raid those cereal packets and keep your tokens coming in. Each box top is worth 10p or can be exchanged for new books for school. Sainsbury’s and Tesco have just launched their 2010 token schemes so please collect these for us together with Flora Cooking with Schools and any others that may appear – they all help! Additionally this year Tesco are running an inkjet cartridge recycling scheme which offers 10 tokens per cartridge that they can recycle. We will have a collection box for you to drop off eligible cartridges and also freepost envelopes which can be used to send them off individually if you’d prefer. Let’s do our bit for the environment and benefit the school at the same time! Lost Property Our lost property box is now over-flowing and taking up far too much space in our humbly sized medical room. Please can all parents come and claim their childrens’ belongings on Monday 8th March. The lost property box will be placed outside when school finishes on Monday, any items remaining will be bagged and sent to a clothes recycling outlet. Update from the PTFA A big thank-you to each and every one of you for the massive success of the valentines cake stall. We sold all the cakes and biscuits you made, and achieved a total of £132.00. This money has been used to fund one of the authors coming in to the school to meet the children during book week. The next event on the agenda is the Race Night which takes place on Friday 5th March at 7.30pm. Last year’s event was a huge success, so do come along, have a bet, some supper, spend all your money and have some adult fun! With Mother’s day looming, help us lessen the stress for all. On Thursday 11th and Friday 12th March we are opening the Mother’s day shop. A bit like the Santa shop at Christmas, let the children pick a present from our selection of carefully selected items for mums’ enjoyment. It’s a snip at a cost of £1.00 a present. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!!! – We need help with manning the Mothers day shop on Friday 12thMarch; the hours are 9am-12pm then 1pm-3pm. If you can fill any part of these time slots then please let us know. Finally looking ahead to April get ready for the children’s Easter egg hunt! Lambing Weekend Angley School Farm will be open to the general public on Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th from 10.00am to 5.00pm, for their annual lambing weekend. Entrance will be £2 (children under 3 free). All proceeds support the Farm. Haiti A huge thank you to everyone who donated towards this charity. We raised £312.55 in total. DATES FOR YOUR DIARY
