Cranbrook Church of England Primary School NEWSLETTER November 2009
Senior Citizen's Lunch Club
Every Wednesday we host a senior citizen's lunch immediately after the children finish their lunch. This is beneficial to the whole community, senior citizens and children alike. It also helps us to provide extra finance to support our kitchen. It relies on volunteers to help set up tables and prepare the hall. If you think you could spare an hour of your time on the occasional Wednesday to help us with this important aspect of the life of the school, please contact the school office.
Sickness absence
We are entering that time of year when children and adults catch colds, flu and other bugs. In order to minimise contagion we ask that children are kept at home for one full day before returning to school following an infection. We know from experiences in other schools, that this significantly reduces the overall absence rate, so we hope that you will cooperate with this policy.
Swine Flu
The chief medical officer advises that this remains a largely mild illness and the Health Protection Agency says that there is nothing to be gained by closing schools. If you or your child contract symptoms of the illness, it is essential that you stay away from the school until such time as you are free of the symptoms.
A vaccine is now available, and children with particular health conditions, which may make them more vulnerable, are given higher priority. If your child is particularly vulnerable in the event of contracting swine flu, you should consult your general practitioner.
Bonfire Night Thank You!
What a wonderful evening we enjoyed last night! A professional bonfire display, fantastic Guys, including Michael Jackson!!, a much appreciated barbecue and lots more. It was fabulous to see so many people from the town come and join us for this first fireworks display in Cranbrook for many years.
We owe thanks to our Friends of Cranbrook Primary School, who put the evening together.
We should not underestimate the amount of work and organization that has gone into making the evening possible. Special thanks go to Gary Bridgland, who provided the fireworks and bonfire display, Tom Tiffin, Nicci Copping, Caroline Stern, Lois Dignan and the entire team, who organized and publicized the event. It has helped raise significant funds for the school, which we intend to spend on musical instruments, playground apparatus and other resources for the school.
The Friends have been able to make a significant contribution to the life of the school over the last few years, as well as being able to enhance our provision for the children. If you would like to get involved in future events, please contact either a member of the Friends Team, Mr Wibroe or the school office.
Well done and thank you to all who helped us make this such a memorable evening!
Book Fair
The Book Fair will be with us until Tuesday afternoon, so there is still plenty of time to come and buy a good quality book for your child at very good prices. The Book Fair is in the hall each afternoon in the school hall. Come and have a browse.
Remembrance Day
Some of our children will be representing the school in the Remembrance parade at St Dunstan's on Sunday and we will be keeping a minute's silence at 11am on 11th November. Why not join us at the Remembrance service on Sunday morning?
Quality Mark
The school is currently undergoing an assessment for the Quality Mark. We are half way through the assessment and we hope soon to be able to bring you news that we have achieved this national recognition. Quality Mark is awarded by the Basic Skills Agency to schools who demonstrate their commitment and good practice in ensuring that children achieve very good outcomes in basic skills: numeracy and literacy. Our school has worked hard over the last 3 years to ensure that we give this high priority and that we track the progress of each child very closely, so that we can give the necessary extra support when it is needed. Achieving the Quality Mark would be a great way to celebrate our success in delivering high standards.
Photographs
The school photographer will be here on Tuesday 10th November. Parents who would like to bring younger siblings to school for a family photograph please endeavour to come to school by 8.15am. Children should come to school dressed smartly in school uniform.
Open Morning - 26 November
We are holding our annual Open Morning for prospective parents on 26 November at 9.30am. If you are able to assist by helping to serve coffee and cakes and by talking to new parents about our wonderful school, please contact the school office.
Key Stage 1 Production
We are once again approaching Christmas and KS1 are starting work on their production, which we look forward to in December (dates in the calendar below). We wish the children and teachers well as they embark upon their rehearsals.
Parents' Forum Meeting
The next Parents' Forum meeting will be held in the Out of School Club on Friday, 13th November from 9am to 10.15am and all parents and carers are warmly invited to come along. The purpose of this monthly meeting is to provide an opportunity for parents to become involved in the school so that we can all focus on maintaining an excellent learning environment for pupils. The next meeting will be based on the theme of children's behaviour. Mr Wibroe will talk about the 'Restorative Approach' which is being implemented throughout the school. It is hoped parents will come along and find out about this method of teaching positive behaviour.
Walk on Wednesday
The WOW scheme started for the third consecutive on Wednesday, 7th October. Pupils who walk at least 10 minutes to school on Wednesday have been collecting stickers for their WOW Tally Cards. At the end of each term we will award the WOW trophy to the class with the highest percentage of walkers. WOW is aimed at keeping cars at the school gate to a minimum, keeping healthy and reducing pollution. Thank you for supporting WOW and helping our school gain a Platinum Award from Kent County Council's School Travel Plan Officer.
Parent Class Representatives
This year we are hoping to develop the role of Parent Class Representatives. Each class has two parents who have volunteered to act as Class Reps. The role of the Class Reps is to liaise with the other parents within their child's class and the class teacher to aid communication about forthcoming events and to recruit parental help when required. It is hoped that as many Parent Reps as possible will come to the monthly Parents' Forum meetings so that they can find out about school issues and discuss any matters that have been brought to their attention. The names of the Class Reps are listed below:
Carle Class - Ruth Beacham and Nicci Copping
Ahlberg Class - Sarah Caller and Lesley Atkins
King-Smith Class - Caroline Mummery and Jane Taylor
Caroline Stern will act as Key Stage 1 Parent Class Rep co-ordinator
Morpurgo Class - Lou Parks and Claire Saunders
Rowling Class - Jo Baldwin
(who will also be Key Stage 2 Parent Class Rep co-ordinator)
Lewis Class - Carol Russell and Lucy Gower
Pullman Class - Diane Jarrett and Melissa Eyles
