Cranbrook Church of England Primary School NEWSLETTER September 2009

Welcome to the new school year.  We trust you have all enjoyed happy holidays with your children.  It was great to see that everyone was here on the first day back and so far this term attendance has been very good.  Please let’s work together to keep it that way.  The children seem to have settled into their new classes very well, and during the first week, the teachers have spent time on team building activities to help the children to learn to work together and build mutual respect.

We are a smaller school this term, with 7 classes rather than 8, which means that the children have more space, particularly on the playgrounds.  It also means that the atmosphere around the school is even quieter.

Attendance

Attendance so far this term has been very good.  We hope we can keep it that way.  Even from the earliest years in education, attendance is vital to ensuring that your child makes good progress.  We want all the children to make the most of their time at school and achieve the goals we set for them.  They need to be in school everyday to learn properly.  Please read the leaflet sent out to you earlier this week, and please ensure that your child(ren) is in school on time every day.

Transition Meetings

The parents’ forum has been discussing ways in which we can include you more in your child’s learning.  As part of this, we are holding transition meetings on 21 September, so that you can meet your child’s new teacher and hear about the learning that is being planned for this year.

These will be held at 3.30pm for Key Stage 1 classes (Carle, Ahlberg and King-Smith) and 4.15pm for Key Stage 2 classes (Morpurgo, Rowling, Lewis and Pullman). A crèche will be provided for the children.

We realise that 3.30 and 4.15pm will not be convenient for everyone, and we do recognise the problems for working parents, but after careful consideration and based on experience, we have decided that these are the times at which we are likely to get most parents attending.  Please do support these meetings, as it is important that you have an understanding of the learning your children will be experiencing during the school year.

In addition the teachers will be issuing regular newsletters outlining the learning for each term, so that you know what is coming up and can support your child at home.

Healthy Eating and Drinking

We are a Healthy School and we promote healthy eating with the children.  Again, we need your support.  In Key Stage 1 (Carle, Ahlberg and King-Smith) we provide a free piece of fruit or vegetable as a snack at morning break time.  Unfortunately we are not able to offer free fruit in Key Stage 2, but the children should bring their own fruit or a vegetable snack to have at morning break time.  Crisps, biscuits, sweets, or chocolate based snacks are not allowed.

New arrivals!

We are delighted to advise you that during the summer holiday Miss Button, Mrs Woods, and Mrs Broadie became proud parents of their new babies. Miss Button now has a baby boy and both Mrs Woods and Mrs Broadie now have baby girls.

Clubs

We are in the process of putting together clubs for the coming year.  If any parent(s) would like to run a club, please let us know.  You may have a skill or interest that you could share with a group of children and we would welcome any club opportunities that you might be able to offer.  As the school is smaller, there are fewer staff, which means fewer clubs, so volunteers to help run clubs would be greatly appreciated.

Cranbrook Primary Out of School Club

Welcome back to all our children and their parents/carers.  We have now officially received our new Registration from Ofsted, which has, due to our extension allowed our number of intake to go from 26 to 39  per session ( based on children aged 8 or under).  We are also busy over the first three weeks with the transitional project for the reception children.  The children have also been busy with growing their sun flowers, all at various heights (Katie’s is the tallest).

The Trustees are at present in the throws of organising an official opening of our extension, date to be advised in due course.

If you are interested in your child attending our breakfast, after school or holiday club, then please either pop in or telephone on 01580 720437 for further information.

Malawi

Mrs Piper will be travelling to our link school, Kambwiri, in Malawi for 5 days on 16th October, we wish her all the best and look forward to hearing all about her venture upon her return.
